Best Time for Manaslu Circuit Trek

The Manaslu Circuit Trek can be done throughout the year, but the best seasons to undertake this extraordinary Himalayan journey are Spring (March to May) and Autumn (September to November). These periods offer the most favorable weather conditions, clear skies, and stunning mountain views.

Spring (March to May)

  • Weather: Mild and warming temperatures with blooming rhododendrons and alpine flowers along the trail.

  • Visibility: Clear skies provide spectacular views of Mt. Manaslu and surrounding peaks.

  • Crowds: Moderate, making it a peaceful trekking experience with fewer tourists than Everest or Annapurna regions.

  • Wildlife & Flora: Spring brings vibrant flora, including colorful rhododendron forests and blooming meadows.

  • Considerations: Snow starts melting on the higher passes, making trails more accessible.

Autumn (September to November)

  • Weather: Stable, dry, and cool weather with minimal rainfall and crisp, clear skies.

  • Visibility: Often considered the best time for panoramic mountain vistas and photography.

  • Crowds: Slightly busier than spring but still less crowded than popular trekking routes.

  • Festivals: Opportunity to experience local Tibetan Buddhist festivals and harvest celebrations.

  • Considerations: Temperatures begin to drop after November, especially at higher altitudes.

Other Seasons

  • Summer/Monsoon (June to August): Heavy rains cause slippery trails, landslides, and leeches. Trekking during this period is not recommended due to safety concerns and limited mountain visibility.

  • Winter (December to February): Cold temperatures and snow can block high passes like Larkya La Pass. While trekking is possible, it is only recommended for experienced trekkers equipped for extreme cold and winter conditions.

Additional Tips for the Best Trekking Experience

  • Permits: Make sure to obtain the Manaslu Restricted Area Permit (MCAP) and Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP) well in advance, especially during peak seasons.

  • Acclimatization: Both spring and autumn provide optimal conditions for acclimatization but always allow extra rest days if needed.

  • Gear: Pack layers for temperature variation, good trekking boots, rain gear (for spring), and sun protection.

  • Booking: Early bookings during peak seasons ensure availability of accommodations and guides.

Choosing the spring or autumn seasons for the Manaslu Circuit Trek guarantees the best combination of pleasant weather, stunning mountain views, and cultural experiences. Whether you prefer the blossoming landscapes of spring or the clear, crisp days of autumn, these seasons offer ideal conditions for a safe, enjoyable, and unforgettable Himalayan adventure.

Important Notes on the Manaslu Circuit Trek

  • Restricted Area Permit Required: The Manaslu region is a restricted trekking area, and all trekkers must obtain the Manaslu Restricted Area Permit (MCAP) and the Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP) before starting the trek. Permit applications should be processed well in advance.
  • Physical Fitness: This trek involves moderate to strenuous trekking with steep ascents, long walking days, and high-altitude passes like the Larkya La Pass (5,160m). A good level of fitness and prior trekking experience is strongly recommended.
  • Acclimatization is Crucial: Proper acclimatization days are built into the itinerary to prevent altitude sickness. Trekkers must listen to their bodies and communicate any symptoms immediately to guides.
  • Weather Variability: Weather can change rapidly in the Himalayas. Pack layered clothing suitable for warm days, cold nights, rain, and possible snow at higher elevations.
  • Limited Facilities: The region is remote with basic teahouse accommodations. Facilities may be simple, with limited electricity and Wi-Fi, especially in higher villages.
  • Altitude Sickness Risk: Be aware of altitude sickness symptoms such as headaches, nausea, and dizziness. Carry medication and a first aid kit, and always trek under the guidance of experienced guides.
  • Porter Service Available: Porters can be hired to carry luggage (up to 15-20 kg per porter). This helps reduce physical strain and enhances your trekking experience.
  • Environmental Responsibility: Practice Leave No Trace principles. Avoid littering, minimize plastic use, and respect local wildlife and culture.
  • Emergency Evacuation: Due to the remote nature, helicopter evacuation is possible but expensive. Travel insurance with emergency evacuation coverage is strongly advised.
  • Cash Availability: ATMs are only available in Kathmandu and Besisahar. Carry enough cash for tea houses, meals, tips, and personal expenses during the trek.
  • Local Culture and Etiquette: Respect local customs and traditions. Ask permission before photographing people, and dress modestly when visiting monasteries or villages.
  • Communication: Mobile network coverage is limited and sporadic along the trail. Satellite phones or walkie-talkies may be used by guides for emergencies.

Hidden Gem for Trekkers

I just finished the Manaslu Circuit Trek and it was one of the best experiences of my life. The views of the mountains were breathtaking, and the trail felt peaceful and not crowded. I loved walking through the small villages and seeing how people live in the Himalayas. The guide and porter were amazing—so kind, helpful, and always smiling. Every tea house we stayed in was warm and welcoming. The Larke Pass day was tough, but the views at the top were worth it. I felt safe and cared for the whole way. I highly recommend this trek for anyone who wants a quiet, beautiful, and real adventure in Nepal.

Bonding with the Crew

The Manaslu trek was peaceful, raw, and absolutely stunning. I enjoyed every single day of walking, especially through the beautiful forests and stone villages. It felt like a hidden treasure, far away from the busy tourist trails. The altitude was manageable, and the itinerary gave us enough time to rest and adjust. Our guide knew the area very well and made us feel like family. The food in the tea houses was much better than I expected. I loved trying Dal Bhat every day! I would come back to Nepal for more treks like this.

Raw, Remote, Remarkable

Fewer trekkers, bigger smiles from villagers. Felt like discovering a secret side of Nepal.

Larke Pass Was Epic!

Crossing Larke La Pass at 5,100 meters was the highlight of the trek! The sunrise view over the snowy peaks was unforgettable. The team took great care of us. We were provided with good food, cozy rooms, and friendly company. Manaslu is a hidden jewel, and the guide knows this route very well.
