Reaching your trailhead is the first logistical puzzle of any Nepal trek. Do you fly to Lukla or take the new road? Take a tourist bus to Pokhara or fly? Hire a private jeep to Syabrubesi or share a local bus? This Kathmandu to trailhead transportation guide covers every major trek route in Nepal with 2026 prices, schedules, and booking tips so you can plan the smoothest possible start to your trek.

Kathmandu to Lukla (Everest Base Camp Trek)
The flight from Kathmandu (Rabintra Airport) to Lukla (Tenzing-Hillary Airport) is the most famous and most weather-dependent domestic flight in Nepal. It takes 35 minutes and costs USD 180-220 one-way for foreigners. Airlines operating this route include Yeti Airlines, Sita Air, and Summit Air. Flights depart between 6:00 AM and 9:00 AM, when the weather is clearest. Afternoon flights are routinely cancelled or delayed by clouds in the Lukla valley.
An alternative is the new road from Kathmandu to Thamdanda via Salleri, then 1-2 days of walking to Lukla. This saves the USD 180 flight but adds 1.5 days of travel and a long jeep ride on a rough road. Most EBC trekkers still fly to Lukla for time efficiency. Book your Lukla flight at least 3 weeks in advance during peak season (March-May, September-November), and always buy a flexible ticket since weather cancellations are common. For an even more spectacular arrival, consider the Everest Scenic Mountain Flight as a separate experience.
Kathmandu to Pokhara and Besisahar (Annapurna Treks)
For the Annapurna Circuit, Annapurna Base Camp, and Annapurna Express treks, you first travel from Kathmandu to Pokhara (200 km, 6-7 hours by tourist bus or 25 minutes by flight). The tourist bus costs USD 8-15 and departs daily at 7:30 AM from Kathmandu’s Gongabu Bus Park. The flight costs USD 110-125 and runs every hour from 8 AM to 4 PM. Most trekkers take the bus to Pokhara and the flight back to Kathmandu at the end.
From Pokhara, you take another bus or private jeep to your trailhead. For the Annapurna Circuit, the trailhead is now Jagat (reached via Besisahar), a 6-7 hour drive from Pokhara. For Annapurna Base Camp, you drive to Nayapul (1.5 hours from Pokhara). For the Annapurna Express, you drive directly to Ghandruk. Private jeeps cost USD 80-150 per vehicle depending on destination and are worth the cost for groups of 3-4. See our Annapurna Circuit Trek package for all-inclusive transport.
Kathmandu to Syabrubesi (Langtang Valley Trek)
The Langtang Valley trek starts at Syabrubesi, 7-8 hours by jeep from Kathmandu. The road is paved most of the way but rough in the last 30 km. A shared local bus costs USD 7-10 per person and departs at 7 AM from Machapokhari Bus Park. A private 4WD jeep costs USD 120-150 and is much more comfortable. Most Langtang trekkers hire a private jeep to save time and arrive at Syabrubesi before dark.
Kathmandu to Soti Khola (Manaslu Circuit Trek)
The Manaslu Circuit starts at Soti Khola, reached via Arughat. A private jeep from Kathmandu takes 6-7 hours to Arughat and another 1.5 hours to Soti Khola, costing USD 150-200 per vehicle. There is also a local bus from Kathmandu’s Gongabu Bus Park to Arughat (USD 8-12, 7-8 hours), then a local jeep to Soti Khola (USD 3-5 per person, 1.5 hours). Trekkers on the Manaslu Circuit Trek typically take a private jeep for comfort and reliability. The road is paved up to Arughat and rough beyond.
Kathmandu to Jomsom (Mustang and Dolpo Treks)
For Upper Mustang, you can either fly Kathmandu-Pokhara-Jomsom (USD 130-160 total one-way) or take a bus/jeep via Pokhara and the Kali Gandaki valley (1.5 days). The flight saves 2 days but is frequently cancelled in the afternoon. From Jomsom, you continue by jeep to Kagbeni, the entry point to Upper Mustang. For Upper Dolpo, the route is more complex: fly Kathmandu to Nepalgunj, then fly to Juphal, then 3 hours of walking or jeep to Dunai. Our Upper Mustang Trek and Upper Dolpo Trek packages handle all of this.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
How early should I book my Lukla flight?
Book at least 3-4 weeks in advance for peak season (March-May, September-November). Last-minute bookings during peak season often require paying USD 50-100 extra or taking a less desirable early-morning slot. Weather cancellations are common; build a 1-day buffer into your itinerary.
Is it safe to fly to Lukla?
Lukla’s Tenzing-Hillary Airport is famously challenging due to its short runway and mountain setting, but the airlines operating there (Yeti, Sita, Summit) have a strong safety record for domestic Nepali flights. Morning flights are safest. Trust your pilot’s judgment; if they delay or cancel, accept it.
Can I share a jeep with other trekkers?
Yes. Many teahouses in Kathmandu and Pokhara organize shared jeeps to popular trailheads like Syabrubesi, Soti Khola, and Jagat. Cost per person is USD 15-40 depending on the route. The Trek Pathways team can arrange shared transport for solo trekkers to reduce cost.
Are there night buses to trailheads in Nepal?
No. Mountain roads in Nepal are dangerous after dark due to fog, narrow curves, and occasional landslides. All tourist transport departs between 6 AM and 8 AM and arrives before sunset. Plan your itinerary around daytime travel only.
