Best Time for Manaslu Larke Pass Trek

The Manaslu Larke Pass Trek is a high-altitude Himalayan adventure that demands favorable weather, stable trail conditions, and clear mountain views. While the trek is technically possible year-round, the best and safest times are spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November).

Spring Season (March to May) – Most Colorful and Pleasant

Spring is one of the most recommended seasons to do the Manaslu Larke Pass Trek. The weather is mild, the skies are generally clear, and the landscapes come alive with blooming rhododendrons, magnolias, and lush greenery.

Advantages:

  • Stable weather with fewer chances of rain or snow
  • Clear skies and excellent mountain visibility
  • Blooming forests and colorful landscapes
  • Comfortable daytime temperatures at both low and high altitudes
  • Ideal for photography and wildlife spotting

Temperature Range:

  • Lower regions: 10°C to 25°C
  • Higher regions: -5°C to 10°C

Autumn Season (September to November) – Best Overall Conditions

Autumn is considered the peak trekking season in Nepal, and for good reason. Post-monsoon, the air is clean, the weather is crisp, and the views are spectacular. Trails are at their best, and teahouses are fully operational.

Advantages:

  • Exceptional visibility of snow-capped peaks like Mount Manaslu (8,163m)
  • Dry, stable weather is ideal for crossing the Larke La Pass (5,160m)
  • Cultural bonus: experience local festivals like Dashain and Tihar
  • Comfortable trekking temperatures and safer trail conditions

Temperature Range:

  • Lower regions: 10°C to 20°C
  • Higher regions: -10°C to 5°C

Winter Season (December to February) – Challenging but Peaceful

While winter brings solitude and clear skies, it also brings harsh cold and heavy snow, especially around Larke Pass. Trekking is possible for experienced trekkers, but many lodges at higher elevations may be closed.

Challenges:

  • Very cold temperatures, especially at night
  • Risk of heavy snow and pass closure
  • Limited teahouse services in remote areas
  • Not suitable for first-time trekkers

Temperature Range:

  • Lower regions: 5°C to 15°C
  • Higher regions: -20°C to -5°C

Monsoon Season (June to August) – Not Recommended

The monsoon season brings heavy rainfall, landslides, leeches, and muddy trails. Cloud cover obstructs mountain views, and trail conditions can become hazardous.

Challenges:

  • Poor trail conditions and frequent landslides
  • Slippery paths and swollen rivers
  • Limited views due to cloud and mist
  • High humidity and leech-infested lower trails

Temperature Range:

  • Lower regions: 15°C to 30°C
  • Higher regions: 0°C to 10°C

Quick Overview – Month-by-Month Recommendation

Month Recommended Weather Highlights
January Challenging Very cold; snow likely at Larke Pass
February Caution Cold; better than Jan; fewer crowds
March Best Dry, blooming season starts
April Best Peak spring bloom, stable weather
May Good Warmer, occasional pre-monsoon storms
June Not Advised Wet, muddy, and poor visibility
July Avoid Peak monsoon; trail hazards
August Avoid Continued monsoon effects
September Best Clear skies return, greenery remains
October Peak Ideal trekking weather & festivals
November Best Clear, dry, and less crowded
December Cold Snow risk begins; quiet trails

Raw and Real Nepal

Manaslu Circuit was quieter than other trails, which I loved. Crossing Larkya La Pass was a proud moment. The views and villages were stunning. This trek gave me insight into rural Nepal. We trekked through remote villages, met kind locals, and shared stories. Thanks to our guide, Nilan for taking care of everything, and Saran for arranging the trip with so much care.
