How difficult is the Rupina La Pass Trek?

It is a strenuous trek. You need to be fit enough to walk 5–7 hours a day for several days, often on steep and rocky trails. The main challenge is altitude: the pass is at 4,720 m and you sleep above 4,000 m. We build in a rest day at Mishra to help you acclimatise, but you should have some previous trekking experience.

What is the highest point on the trek?

The highest point is Rupina La at 4,720 m. The highest overnight stop is High Camp at 4,100 m. We descend to 3,800 m the same day we cross the pass.

What are the teahouses like?

Accepted Answer

They are basic. Most have shared rooms with plank beds and blankets, and a communal dining room with a stove. Toilets are often outside and there is no heating in the rooms. Hot showers and charging cost extra and may not be available every day. We recommend bringing a warm sleeping bag and a power bank.

Do I need travel insurance?

Yes. You must have travel insurance that covers trekking up to 5,000 m and emergency helicopter evacuation. We will ask for a copy of your policy before the trek.

When is the best time to go?

Spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) are the best seasons. The weather is usually stable and the views are clear. Winter can be very cold with snow on the pass, and summer brings rain, clouds and leeches.

How do you manage acclimatisation?

Accepted Answer

We follow a gradual ascent. After Barpak, we gain height slowly and include a rest day at Mishra (3,150 m) before moving to High Camp. Our guides check your oxygen saturation and health each morning. If anyone shows signs of altitude sickness, we descend immediately.
